Christmas Wish

Christmas, they say, is for kids. My family celebrates christmas the simple way. For us, the celebration need not to be flamboyant, as long as the family is complete, happy, and healthy, that's what matters most.

So, as I type this entry, I know that Christmas is just around the corner. I wanna show how grateful I am to have them as my friends and just a simple gift would remind them I'm always there for them whenever they need me.

(drumroll)

Well, I know this gift's too much to ask, but this is just my Christmas wish! A galaxy note will be a wonderful present this Christmas, considering I am an Android Fan and I love how Android works. I would love to try using a phone which runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Aside being overpriced, Apple products does not meet my expectations, kaya nung nilabas ang iPhone 4 at 4s, di na ko bumili pa.

So that's it, my Christmas wish is a Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Nocturnal - Insomnia issues. Di makatulog?

I admit, I have sleeping disorders. Ang buong akala ko nawala na ang problema ko sa pagtulog but it came back! A couple of years ago I was experiencing sleeping problems, I always end up tossing and turning in bed, and the only remedy I thought was to go transfer a different bedroom. And so it worked, I was able to sleep soundly because the other room has an AC!

I will really have a hard time to put down that book!

According to studies, tryptophan is responsible for the secretion of serotonin hormones, and those hormones play a vital role with our sleep.

2.) Do not drink Coffee. As much as possible, if you don't wanna suffer from sleepless nights, might as well abstain from this kind of beverage.

3.) Read/watch movies/listen to relaxing music. Same goes with the movies, it would be better if you watch boring movies coz it will certainly make you sleep at night. Relaxing music, such as instrumental music will also work wonders.

4.) Airconditioner.

I guess if you guys will prefer sleeping pills, it's better if you consult your doctor first, para malaman kung anong sleeping pills ang mainam para sa inyo.

We spend our nights working and our days sleeping, so when I first set foot in this industry, it was like, my world has changed! Though the compensation is good but in return, it gave me a big toll on my body. Good performance should be maintained to avoid termination.

I just read one article today regarding the complaints of call center agents and I would have to say that all the things written in the article are true.

We received several complaints from call center employees, both active and resigned about the hard working conditions in the industry.
We have therefore written to Sen. Jinggoy Estrada as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor and Employment to conduct an inquiry on the matter.
The following are the list of complaints we received:
1. Low salaries of P15,000 compared to P25,000 in Singapore.
2. Long working hours of 12 hours straight with only a 15 minute break.
3. Low 10 % night differential pay.
4. Mandatory requirement to work on holidays including Christmas, New Year and Holy Week.
5. Prohibition against joining labor unions in violation of labor laws.
6. Inadequate healthcare facilities and coverage resulting in a high incidence of pneumonia, heart, lung, UTI, and other ailments.
It is to be noted too that call center jobs are high risk job because of the night to morning work schedule. There have been several documented cases of call center employees being held up on their way to and from work.
The Philippines is the call center capital of the world both in terms of revenue and manpower. Our call center employees contribute greatly to our economy. Surely they need the support and protection of government. The Senate, by appropriate legislation, should take the lead in providing the same.
The Department of Labor is also asked to look into this matter.
Isa isahin natin.

1.) 15,000 is a very generous amount for an entry level position, and on top of the 15,000 pesos that call center agents are earning during their early months in the company, they receive several incentives such as rice subsidy, meal allowance, transportation allowance, etc. However, because of the working environment and because the job is really exhausting, I think 15,000 isn't enough. Call center employers should realize that call center agents are the frontliners of their clients and they carry a heavy burden. Personally, I am a Microsoft Call center employee and I've had enough with all the complaints about the product but thankfully, because of the call center industry I was able to nurture my sarcasm. hahaha

2.) Long working hours is really an issue. When I read my contract, it was stated that I am required to work overtime. Having a background in Labor Law, I know that mandatory overtime is unlawful, and this doesn't make any sense. Call centers are proliferating, feeding itself like a virus. Parami sila ng parami, which is good, kasi mabibigyan ng job opportunities ang mga taong walang trabaho. But why? Just because there are periods where call centers lack staffing, and they need to require their agents to render overtime? I really don't think it's right. Mandatory overtime is unlawful, that's what my law professor said.

3.) Night differential rate should be not less than 10%, that's according to the labor code Rule 2 Section 2

SECTION 2. Night shift differential. — An employee shall be paid night shift differential of no less than ten per cent (10%) of his regular wage for each hour of work performed between ten o'clock in the evening and six o'clock in the morning.

Hindi biro ang magpuyat ha, especially if you're bombarded with lots of complaints from your clients, and all you have to do is solve the problems of your customers while the fact remains that those problems aren't your problems. That sucks!

4.) Mandatory work on holidays?

5.) Why are call centers not allowed to join labor unions? I guess it will be better if call centers are allowed to join labor unions, so that employees can address their issues and complaints about the industry. Well agents, DOLE is there to listen to your problems. The reason for this is to attract foreign proponents to set up operations in a climate where labor unions are not allowed so they do not have the threat of labor unrest.

6.) When you work in this kind of industry you are susceptible to various diseases, dahil sa nature ng work na talaga namang napakastressful.

Stealing Home by Sherryl Woods - Book Review

I've just finished reading Sherryl Woods' book entitled Stealing Home. This is actually the first part of the Sweet Magnolias trilogy and I was so glad that I was able to grab a copy of this book and hopefully in the next few days I'll take a visit to my favorite bookstore to buy the second book of the trilogy.

Summary:

The book is a story of a 40 year old mother named Maddie Townsend and Cal Maddox, a 30 year old high school baseball coach. The setting is in the small town of Serenity in South Carolina. Maddie has just filed her divorce with her husband, Bill Townsend. Well the cause of it was a cliche. Betrayal. Bill is a doctor who fell in love with his nurse, Noreen, and eventually Noreen got pregnant. Noreen was the other woman and Bill has a secret affair with her. When Maddie found out about Bill's affair, she filed the divorce papers. It has caused Maddie and her children to go through series of depression and misunderstanding. Maddie's son, whose name is Tyler, is a high school baseball player who happens to be coached by Cal Maddox.

Cal noticed Tyler's loss of interest with his studies and as well as baseball, so Cal wondered what's bothering Tyler. Cal tried to talk to him but for some reason, he refused and he doesn't want to talk about it. And so Cal's solution is to talk with Tyler's mother and ask what's the matter with her son. Of course, Cal knew about the divorce, considering the fact that they live in a small town, and gossips spread like wildfire. But he wants to confirm whether that really is the cause of Tyler's distraction.

Then Cal knew Maddie and since Maddie is in a desperate need for help regarding how she will deal with her son's performance in school, Cal lend a hand and he promised he will do everything to help Tyler with his baseball and his studies at the same time. Eventually, because Cal is a nice guy, he and Maddie became close friends. Cal has been visiting Maddie's house on a regular basis that caused rumors in their town, that Maddie is dating with her son's baseball coach.

The school where Cal is teaching has a policy that teachers should set a good example to their students, and the principal has warned Cal not to meet with Maddie anymore, because she's the mother of one of his students. Well talking about minding one's business, clearly the principal is invading Cal's personal life! The principal threatened Cal that if he well continue dating with Maddie, he will surely be terminated and the news has already reached the school's board of directors.

Since Cal continue seeing Maddie and because of the dramatic turn of events Maddie realized that she is starting to fall in love with Cal, and the other way around. The 10 year age gap is not an issue at all. And because of this event, Cal's career is jeopardized but he's not afraid because he is willing to give up his career just to be with Maddie. Until the time came that the board of directors set up a meeting/deliberation whether Cal should stay in the school or not. Just because the school principal heard rumors about Cal and Maddie sleeping together doesn't mean it's true. All the accusations thrown towards Cal are baseless and full of lies. So what if Cal and Maddie has a relationship? It's not enough basis for Cal to be kicked out in the school where he's teaching. And so the board has voted Cal to stay.

It was Maddie's birthday when Bill, her ex husband, went to her house. And she learned that he and Noreen split up and that Bill is pleading a second chance to Maddie. Maddie refused and said there will no longer be second chances for both of them, since Maddie will be marrying Cal sooner. Bill conceded and went away.

And then the marriage happened.

Review:

Overall, the book was fine, it was a typical chick lit novel, and the book was well scripted. The characters were well described by the author and I love her choice of words. This is a great book especially to those who prefer reading light novels.

The King 2 Hearts

Yup, I finished the series last semester and I managed to finish this despite of the hectic schedule. Pinaghalo halong action, drama, romance, suspense at comedy ang tema that's why I can say that this drama is rolled in a wonderful package! The series was top billed by Lee Seung Gi of My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, and Ha Ji Won of Secret Garden.

Now the story is, Lee Jae Ha (played by Seung Gi) is a South Korean Prince who fell in love with Kim Hang Ah (played by Ji Won), a North Korean special agent. Here's the plot.

The King 2 Hearts is set in a alternate universe, where modern-day South Korea is governed by a constitutional monarchy descended from the Joseon Dynasty. Lee Jae-ha is a handsome yet materialistic crown prince who doesn't care about politics and feels total reluctance to being the second in line to the throne. Lee Jae-kang, the current king, tricked him into joining a joint military collaboration with North Korea as a means to help "make him grow up".
Meanwhile, Kim Hang-ah is a North Korean Special Forces Officer who is also the daughter of a North Korean military high command official. Both Jae-ha and Hang-ah meet at the joint military training, a crucial part in establishing friendly relations between the two separate countries. Although the two met each other with a fiery disposition, Jae-ha unwittingly sparks a friendship with Hang-ah and he subsequently falls in love with her. Soon, an arranged marriage is set up between the two and they eventually become engaged. While they attempt to set their differences aside and build a growing relationship, things suddenly take a turn for the worse when King Jae-kang and his wife were assassinated in cold blood by the devious Club M, who are led by John Meyer/Kim Bong-gu, a mysterious magician who wishes to remove the Royal Family and rule in their stead. Now crowned the new King of South Korea, Jae-ha must learn to be responsible and protect the country before it is too late.

The series will be aired in the Philippines probably next year and according to rumors, it might be aired on GMA Network or TV5.
